NUM PRESS RELEASE - MOTHBALLING/CLOSURE OF HARWORTH COLLIERY 27 JULY 2005
The National Union of Mineworkers Vice-Chairman Keith Stanley has today condemned UK Coal on its decision to mothball/close Harworth Colliery in Nottinghamshire. UK Coal has not initiated any form of consultation with the NUM before carrying out this decision.
The pit has vast amounts of coal available in the top hard seam and to mothball/close it upon completion of mining of the existing coal-faces will inevitably close it thus isolating millions of tonnes of coal.
The NUM is opposing this decision and is in the process of meeting with the energy minister Malcolm Wicks to discuss Harworth and the Government?s future energy policy.
Keith Stanley said, ?This Labour Government has got to pull its head out of the sand and deal with the ever increasing energy crisis that will be upon us in the very near future. The Government must seriously consider taking the industry away from UK Coal who has no interest in the security of supply, their decision to close mines is based on profit margins alone?.

FUNERAL FOR THATCHER
