TUC CONDEMS JOBS TO INDIA MOVE BY BRITISH GAS - 18 JULY 2005

TUC condemns Jobs to India move by British Gas
Speaking today TUC Regional Secretary Roger McKenzie said' This move by British Gas to offshore up to 2,000 jobs as part of the introduction of new computer systems is devastating news for the west midlands economy. Yet again we are seeing a major employer casting aside large numbers of their employees on the basis that they can buy labour cheaper on the Indian sub-continent.'
The two unions involved, GMB and UNISON, are both insisting on meaningful negotiations with British gas in line with their agreements with the company. Neither union has ruled out strike action as a last resort.
Mr McKenzie continued 'British Gas makes big profits from British customers and they should be supporting jobs in the west midlands economy. Savings on UK staff wages ware unlikely to be converted into savings for the consumer, more likely to bolster dividends to shareholders. This is of little help to those facing the prospect of securing another job in the west midlands'
