Latest polls show Tory lead narrowing

Gordon Brown is closing the gap on the Conservatives, according to the latest opinion polls.

A Populus poll gives the Tories a lead of just three points over Labour.

It put the Conservatives on 36 per cent - a fall of three points over the past week - while Labour is up one on 33 per cent. The Liberal Democrats are unchanged on 21 per cent.

If the results were repeated on polling day, it would see Labour returned as the biggest party in a hung parliament.

A ComRes poll also suggests the race is tightening. It puts the Tories on 36 per cent, down one point on their last poll released last night and five points ahead of Labour, who are up one on 31 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats are down one on 19 per cent.
