SOME COAL STATISTICS
Some coal burn statistics
* It took 39.7 million tonnes of coal to generate 27.7 per cent of Britain's electricity last year;
* the 39.7 million tonne burn was the lowest figure since 1953 when 37.3mt was used for power generation;
* power station coal burn in the last four years has declined as follows:
- 2006 ....57.4mt
- 2007.....52.5mt
- 2008.....47.8mt
- 2009 ....39.7mt
The point to stress here is that even at 39.7mt (8mt less than the previous year due to better nuclear performance, cheaper gas and a downturn in demand for power due to the recession), our power stations continue to burn TWICE AS MUCH COAL AS THAT PRODUCED IN THE UK, imports still makingh a significant contribution.
Industrial Action
The National Union of Mineworkers expresses its support for fellow trade unionists in the Public Sector who today are having to resort to withdrawing their labour (a fundamental right of any worker) and take strike action against these unfair cuts to their pensions and terms and conditions.
