LAWRENCE DALY DIES AGED 84 - 01 JUNE 2009
The NUM has learned belatedly of the sad death of our former General Secretary Lawrence Daly.
Lawrence who died on May 23 aged 84, was the leading left-winger in the National Union of Mineworkers, a former Communist, was the NUM’s General Secretary for 16 years, leading — with Joe Gormley and Arthur Scargill — the strikes of 1972 and 1974, the second of which brought down Edward Heath’s government.
He led presented the NUM case to the inquiry in 1972 that settled the strike and obtained considerable increases in wages for all miners.
Ian Lavery NUM President said, "Lawrence was a gaint in the movement, renowned for his oratory, sharpness of mind and cutting wit. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family. The movement has witnessed the passing of a committed trade unionist and the NUM is the poorer for his loss."

Industrial Action
The National Union of Mineworkers expresses its support for fellow trade unionists in the Public Sector who today are having to resort to withdrawing their labour (a fundamental right of any worker) and take strike action against these unfair cuts to their pensions and terms and conditions.
