I believe that you achieved this for miners and I would interested in the arguments and criteria you put forward to establish it.

has anybody got any feedback on miners knee claims etc
Posted by: deano at time: 16/03/2010 23:29
referring to the comment about john prescott saying they have targeted more money into the northern mining communities than the tories would have done...SO WHAT???.prescott and labour have done NOTHING for the mining industry...they have had 13 years to do something and they havnt..they are all wind..all that money pumped in and for what???mile after mile of empty units..we import 30 odd million tonnes of coal every year,,,why hasnt prescott and the labour party opened some pits???..when we went back to work after the strike an old collier said to me 'dunt think thall be any better off under labour young 'un'.how right he was....
Posted by: Cortonwood at time: 18/03/2010 10:56
Well I agree with the empty units comment and also have heard comments that economic migrants (not substantiated evidence investigate for accuracy) are bused into work by one company on the Grimethorpe industrial park defeating the Prescott funding issue for this area. But this is a global problem that the Prescott bunch have to get their head around as have all worker supporters TUC, Unite Etc. they have had 25 years to do something about global economics. NUMPTY MP's and TUC officials Unite seem to have the finger on the pulse.
Posted by: Global Fuel Prices? at time: 18/03/2010 11:01
Easter around the corner? why do you think fuel prices go down after October and rise in March?
Do you think it could be a stealth tax? Joe public start using their vehicles for outings in the summer months hence put up the price let them pay. Another reason for Climate Protection UK Coal.
Posted by: deano at time: 20/03/2010 13:29
i live near the company in grimethorpe...i take the kids to feed the birds on the pond and when the shift turns out from the large industrial unit you could easily close your eyes and think you are in a foreign land,so i agree with cortonwoods take on that prescotts funding issue is more or less defeated.....which adds subsatance to my thoughts that a lot of ex miners, steelworkers etc.. feel as let down by labour as we did by the tories..which was the reason for the results at the euro election..

Interesting reading this from my Sydney hotel.Just arrived from Bangkok to organise the reds their as well. I am well fed up of ''all'' Notts lads being percived cart-blanch as scabs there were/are many that were loyal, and organised well for the union. We should be learning from the mistakes made, and learn from that, not turning inwards and being self distructive. That would make Thatcher's rest when it comes all the more easy for her. Up the reds.

On another tack.
I admit that I am an outsider but I am curious to know where all the coal went?
I remember back in the late 70's confident predictions that we still had billions of tons of recoverable coal in reserve. The new pit at Selby was predicted to be capable of providing tens of millions of tons a year for a century or more. Now its closed! And we actually import coal!
Now, There is a POV that says that it is better to use somebody else's reserves so we can keep ours for later but now the analysts state that there is very little recoverable coal left in the UK
When did this shift in opinion occur and what was the geological justification for it
And is it true??
Posted by: deano at time: 21/03/2010 15:31
paul,,they closed the pits to get rid of us,the miners, nothing to do with economics or reserves,......us the miners along with the steelworkers, dockers, printers, car plants etc etc were a threat to the tories, thats why they closed everything down..they couldnt defeat the unions other than by gettin shut of the jobs....thing is labour have done nothing for manufacturing either......the coal is still in the ground and as far as i can envisage that is where it will remain...even tho thousands of jobs could be created if someone decided to go for it.

I suppose Albert would also attempt to justify miners subscriptions being paid to the UDM in '85 when they'd voted to stay NUM?.Also 'par for the course' I suppose was the attempt to force a dissenting pit(UDM admission in the High Court)to abide by an extremely dodgy(no voting figures ever issued)area decision to join the breakaway, and then poach a pit from a neighbouring NUM area on a pit-wide vote?.You democrats eh Albert!.The inscription under Swadlincote Town Hall clock(and the S Derbys strikers' badge)reads 'Time the Avenger'.Arthur Scargill will be speaking there on April 7th and, with the decimation of the local coalfield,I wouldn't blame him if he made reference to that phrase.Nick Wroughton(ex S Derbys striker & one of the post-'85 NUM Reps for Cadley Hill Mine).

Therefore I realised that I should also post my comments here below.

Albert, You cannot justify scabbing by telling what is patently a downright lie. Miners had all benefits stopped during the strike. I allowed your comment to be posted even though it is without foundation, but scabs were a fact, the betrayed their Union, their class, their families and ultimately themselves. There is only one pit left in Nottinghamhire. They were scabs, not 'so called scabs' and they will remain scabs eternally.
Posted by: albert at time: 16/03/2010 21:08
I think its time you joined the 21st century. Why did the union solicitor help the "scabs" gain their vwf claims then?

25 years ago I lived in Surrey .my local Bobby went up north on police duty against the picket lines ! Yee God I was so ashamed of my nation and what they allowed Thatcher to do. So I sold up and left england. It has not been easy but I could not stomach the ignorance that stared me in the face and did nothing about therape and pillage of our counntry that has gone unabaited ever since. If you get a chance to see the stage performance of Billy ,go,it is sad and profound and beautifull. It brought back the time of the strikes as ifit was yesterday. We all have hard times ahead and never before have we neexde the unions as we do now. Only when they became established was the need greater than now. Now we have another type of poverty to sort out and in a way it is a far more difficult poverty to rid ourselves of. Government corruption under any title and corporate payoffs to keep democracy out of our reach. It truly is wake up time. Good luck and may your God keep you safe and united.

I hope you go from strength to strength we need our unions as never before.
The big corporations are about to enslave all of us if we do not make a stand. All the best to you all. I am hoping that all unions in all nations will go under one banner to improve the ereas that need help and can work collectively to support each other. Then we will see real change for real people.

Kent Miners Festival 2010
As interest in the Kent Miners Festival 2010 surges, organisers are appealing for a main sponsor to back the popular event. The two day spectacular aims to draw former Kent Coalfield communities together at the same time as remembering the rich mining heritage unique to the county's pit towns and villages. Former Betteshanger miner, Gary Cox said: "This is a community event which is free to enter, but to continue in this way, we need as much financial help as possible. This Event is all about giving something back to the people of our communities.†We are keen to secure a main sponsor, but any sponsorship is welcome, be it donations for our prize draw, or performers staging a set for free, or taking part in anyway you can." Held at Fowlmead Country Park, a reserve built on the former spoil tip of the nearby Betteshanger Colliery - the festival has doubled in size since it was inaugurated last August. This year, it will be held on the August Bank Holiday Sunday and Monday. Among the impressive list of activities are events including a miner’s reunion, live music, dancers and a boxing exhibition to name but a few. Other sporting events are in the planning, but local groups - especially youth-based organisations - are urged to get in touch to see how they can become a part of the fun.†We would like to get a youth representative to step forward and join our committee so we know we are representing youngsters properly and it is important we have an adult representative from Thanet," added Mr Cox. The Miners Festival was originally planned as a one off to mark 20 years since the closure of the Kent Coalfield last year. He added: "It soon became clear there was interest in making it a yearly event, but it has become too big to be confined to just one day." The festival is organised by Mr Cox, along with Jimmy Davies, a former Miner and mining history enthusiast and Mark Kilmurray, Education and Events Manager at Fowlmead Country Park with the backing from the MoveTheMiner Committee. Teaming up with the Kent Messenger Group via their reporter Beth Easton and linking up with Phillip Moore of GC- Publishing has helped us to move this event up to the next level. It is hosted in association with Friends of the East Kent Road Car Company who will provide a Park and Ride service on the Sunday with the welcome return of bringing in visitor’s from our Village’s & Towns and a static Vintage Bus Display on the Monday. The Sunday will be dedicated to youth, music and sport, while the Bank Holiday Monday will focus on heritage, including the popular miner’s reunion. There are endless possibilities for sponsorship and clubs and organisations are still urged to get in touch with entertainment ideas to make this year's Kent Miners Festival one to remember.
Gary Cox is available for interview by calling 07800 545135 or email kentminersfestival@sky.com.

Whilst I was never a collier nor did I have the opportunity, having not been born when there were any mines still operating in S/Wales, I still feel solidarity for the miners. Your heroic actions inspired me to become a Socialist, and I'll be damned if I ever lose sight of Socialism. Thank you all for being the greatest men and women to walk the Earth, and for showing me the excellence of Socialism. I owe you all a great debt.

Hello I hope you are well.
I am researching historic mines and miners in the Walker area of Newcastle upon Tyne. Naturally for the truth I am starting with the Honest, hard working people who did the mining rather than the authority who are politically expedient.Tharefore to find out I would love to talk with any miner who remembers working in the mines in the Walker area. Thank you in advance for your interest,
Yours Sincerely
Mike Roche
