Mark Jones 2014

STANDING OVATION OF RESPECT

15 March 2014 - 30 years to the day David Jones was killed on the picket line his father Mark thanked everyone for the support they have given over the past 30 years. It is fair to say that most struggled to hold back tears. Chaired by Chris Kitchen, NUM Secretary, with powerful contributions from ASLEF General Secretary, Mick Whelan, and Miners' MP Ian Lavery the event not only paid tribute to David Jones and Joe Green but also to the sad news in the week of the loss of two great friends of the miners Bob Crow and Tony Benn. Chris Kitchen thanked all for attending including Dan Jarvis MP and assured the meeting that the event will continue in 2015.

GOLDTHORPE NUM 30th Anniversary Tour

19.4.14 Miners from Goldthorpe arranged a tour of the Dearne Valley Coalfield in South Yorkshire. With the help of the superbly restored Mines Rescue Emergency Winder they visited Barnsley Main, Darfield Main, Wath Main, Manvers, Highgate, Hickleton, Barnburgh, Cortonwood and Goldthorpe. With Banners held high the fact that coal was mined in the Dearne Valley and provided decent jobs is not forgotten. Thatcher's scorched earth policy of removing any trace of coal mining has failed to remove it from the memory of those who cared and fought.
